I'm Surprised How Many Experienced Singers Were Unaware Of The Onset

Updated: Jun 17, 2023

The onset, or the beginning of the pitch following inhalation is the foundation of breath control. The problem it addresses is the tight closure of the vocal folds prior to phonation. Starting from that position will lead to undue tension and air loss. ChatGPT explains it well.

The following exercises work well if you pay very close attention to the onset itself. If you don't, you'll lose its effect very quickly. The other danger is most are based on air release, which can cause strain. Sirens and staccato exercises don't necessarily have good onsets.

Part of the epiphany I've had in my training techniques has to do with the relaxation of the soft palate, which is key to a balanced onset.
